In 2011, Ted was involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of one pedestrian and injuries to another. Although he was not found at fault, he spent the next seven years contemplating how the accident might have been prevented. Despite advancements in safety technology, pedestrians continue to face risks from automobiles. In 2018, Ted decided to create and patent a device designed to emit a signal to help prevent collisions. This device is activated only when worn by a living being—whether human, pet, or another form of life—confirmed by a sensor that detects its vitality. If the device is not worn, it does not generate a signal. In August 2023, the US Patent Office granted Patent #11738746 for a "Lifeform Transmission System for Collision Avoidance." Following this, Ted collaborated with Susan Butler to enhance the system, integrating a signal and receiver, and expanding its functionality beyond just automotive and pedestrian safety (Publication number: 20250103057).
